The Polymer Capital of the World at Our Fingertips
by Erin Johnson
Akron, Ohio, might be best known these days as the birthplace of LeBron James, but it is also home to a wide range of industries, from biomedical companies to IT. But no industry is more prevalent in this city on the Ohio and Erie Canal than polymers – the material that is in so many of our everyday items, including shoes, computers, glasses, toothbrushes, cars, appliances and, you guessed it, windows and doors.

This sought-after material is virtually everywhere. And with the world-renowned University of Akron College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at the heart of the city, one could say that there’s nowhere else in the world that boasts a more qualified talent pool. In fact, it is estimated that 8 percent of the polymer industry in the United States is in Northeast Ohio. Now that’s an impressive statistic.
Why am I telling you all of this about Akron?
The short answer is that it is all about progress and advancement. As an industry, we are so reliant on polymers, that tapping into the best of the best to create next-generation products is a necessity.
It’s no secret that Quanex IG Systems moved its R&D labs to the iconic AES building in Akron in 2017, and it has been better than we could have imagined. Not only does the lab have views of the University of Akron and the many polymer-driven businesses the city has to offer, but we’re also able to hire the best talent available to continue moving our products and our industry into the future.
As we move into 2018, we know that the best is yet to come, as we are positioned both geographically and with the mentality to build upon the decades of industry-firsts and innovations.
What’s your product advancement strategy? I’d love to hear about how other companies are tapping into new talent to drive our industry forward. Email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
